The embryo has roughly doubled in size since last week. The brain is growing rapidly and developing distinct regions, while hands and feet emerge as paddle-like structures. Kidneys are nearly ready to begin their work, and the umbilical cord is now clearly established, ferrying nutrients and oxygen from the developing placenta. About the size of a blueberry.

What an ultrasound shows at 7 weeks

A 7-week scan is often done through the vagina, because the embryo is still only about 1 cm long. It usually shows the gestational sac, the yolk sac and the embryo with a flickering heartbeat. In a study of 363 normal pregnancies, a heartbeat could be seen in every case by 6 weeks and 4 days. Around 7 to 8 weeks, the head end of the embryo and the umbilical cord also become easier to make out.

Don't expect to see the embryo move yet. In one scan study, body movements were never seen before 7 weeks and were seen in every case after 8 weeks. The sonographer measures the embryo from crown to rump, or head to bottom. This crown-rump length is the most reliable way to date a pregnancy. Before 9 weeks, your due date is usually changed if the scan and your period dates differ by more than 5 days.

If no heartbeat is seen, the embryo's size matters. Doctors follow strict rules before they diagnose a miscarriage on a scan. Under US consensus criteria, a heartbeat should be visible once the embryo measures 7 mm or more. If the embryo is smaller than that and no heartbeat is seen, it may simply be too early, especially if you ovulated late. The scan is then usually repeated 7 to 14 days later.
